SEARC will not sponsor field day this year. If you miss going to the Astoria Column and trying out some radio contacts using HF antennas that have been hung from the trees in the overflow parking lot, contact President John McKinney at president@W7BUhams.club and volunteer to be the Field Day 2027 Coordinator . . . please!
Meanwhile, for your enjoyment and education, we have three local recommendations:
- The Light Ship Columbia will have the radio room open for some of the hours of Field Day.
.
We plan to have the Lightship W7BU radio room open Saturday June 27th 11am to 2:30pm and Sunday from 11am until at least noon.
Club members could help monitor the Morse Code activity we will set up on the mess deck tables. Operating the HF radio and logging (paper) will be an option also.
Engine room tours are available usually starting about 1pm.
Club members can come directly out to the ship, identify themselves to the Docent and proceed down the ladder to the radio room. If the weather cooperates, we will hoist the W7BU flags on the forward mast.
- STARS (Seaside Tsunami Amateur Radio Society) will be holding a simplex exercise from 11-5 on both Saturday and Sunday.
From the STARS Facebook page:
FIELD DAY
ARRL Field Day is June 27-28. This year, STARS is working in conjunction with AuxComm and SEARC with check-ins from operators simplexing other operators over VHF and/or UHF. If you’d like to participate, contact D.B. at KF7CYH@gmail.com or message us here and we’ll pass it along. ARRL Field Day is the largest annual amateur radio on-the-air event, held the fourth weekend of June each year. Hams across North America set up temporary, off-the-grid stations in public spaces to test emergency communication skills and demonstrate amateur radio to their local communities.
.
- Take a drive to the world’s longest beach on the Long Beach peninsula and see how the Pacific County Amateur Radio Club is doing. They will be set up at the Bolstad beach approach Saturday June 27 starting at 11 am and will go to Sunday June 28 at 11 am.
Bolstad W in Long Beach:
Traveling north on 103 (Pacific Ave.), turn left at the 2nd stoplight in Long Beach, which is Bolstad. You will see the “Longest Beach” arch. And lots of people walking.
